Epic 20 → 30

In short
  • Play the Epic quests from bottom to top by quest level, and fill the Epic sagas without turning them in.
  • Drink your best elixir, for example Sovereign II (+50% for 6 hours), before turning in your sagas (wiki, not cross-checked).
  • Take your levels between saga turn-ins, since the XP bank cap is 2 levels.
  • Run the Tokens of the Twelve quests on Elite or Reaper, since 20 Tokens buy a heart from Lahar.
  • Wear a single XP item, like Voice of the Master, since they do not stack with each other.

6.1 Route

What to do from 20 to 30: play the Epic quests in the table from the lowest to the highest quest level, fill the Epic sagas in §6.2 without turning them in, and collect Tokens (§6.3) and Commendations (§6.4) AX AXS. No 2026 Epic route ranked by XP per minute was found. The Compendium gives no duration in minutes, only Short, Medium, Long or Very Long R115. The U81 notes publish no XP table R113. The U81.4, U82 and U82.1 notes mention no XP change R155 R156 R191. The quest pages below almost all predate U81 (Jul 22, 2026), so treat the levels and numbers as rough guides.

Reference points by Epic quest level. The levels come from the Compendium pages. The sagas come from C-SG.

Epic base level of the quest (not your character's level) Content Pack or expansion (free or paid access only where stated) Source
20-25 Pirates of the Thunder Sea (Epic): Bargain of Blood, Storm the Beaches, The Tide Turns, The Black Loch, Spies in the House. The pack's 5 Epic quests are level 25: Prove Your Worth (Epic), A Legend Revisited, Old Tomb New Tenants, Ghost of a Chance (Epic), Precious Cargo Three-Barrel Cove, Sentinels of Stormreach C-SG R108
21-23 The End of Eberron: The Lords of Dust, The Spinner of Shadows, Servants of the Overlord, Beyond the Rift Web of Chaos (only three free quests, see §5.7); Beyond the Rift (marked Free To Play) C-SG R97 R98
21 Menace of the Underdark: Impossible Demands, The Unquiet Graves, The Lost Thread, The Battle for Eveningstar Menace of the Underdark (level 19-24 pack, paid expansion) R101
22 Menace of the Underdark: The House of Death Undone, The House of Rusted Blades, The House of Broken Chains, The Portal Opens, Don't Drink the Water, In the Belly of the Beast. Raid The Vault of Night (Heroic 10, Epic 22, House Kundarak) Menace of the Underdark; The Vault of Night R101 R05
23 Menace of the Underdark: Trial by Fury, The Deal and the Demon, Reclaiming the Rift. The Druid's Deep (Heroic 17, Epic 23): The Druid's Curse, Outbreak, Thorn and Paw, Overgrowth Menace of the Underdark; The Druid's Deep R101 R104
24 Menace of the Underdark: Caught in the Web. The High Road of Shadows (Heroic 18, Epic 24): Lost in the Swamp, The End of the Road, A Stay at the Inn, Detour, Rest Stop. Ruins of Gianthold: The Maze of Madness, A Cry for Help, Feast or Famine, Trial by Fire, Foundation of Discord, The Crucible, four Return to quests; The Fall of Truth is level 25 Menace of the Underdark; The High Road of Shadows; Ruins of Gianthold (paid) R101 R105 R78
26 Shadow Over Wheloon (Heroic 16, Epic 26): Army of Shadow, The Thrill of the Hunt, A Lesson in Deception, Friends in Low Places, Through a Mirror Darkly. This level 26 may contradict "Level 25 (Epic)" in the expansion description: not verified UNVERIFIED Perils of Cormyr saga (see 6.2) R106
27 Secret of the Storm Horns (Heroic 19, Epic 27): The Tracker's Trap, What Goes Up, Breaking the Ranks, A Break in the Ice, Lines of Supply Perils of Cormyr saga R106
28 Level 28 Quests category: Brothers of the Forge, Dinosaur Crisis, The Haunted Halls of Eveningstar, Time Flies, Toil and Trouble, Tower of Frost. The category mixes Heroic and Epic: Dinosaur Crisis is Heroic 13 / Epic 28 and Tower of Frost is Heroic 14 / Epic 28, both marked Free To Play. Do not build an Epic route from it. Level 29 not verified UNVERIFIED Compendium, Level 28 Quests R109 R69 R91
30 The Mask of Deception: Heroic 16 / Epic 30, Medium, Free To Play, patron The Harpers Free To Play R94

Things to watch on this route.

  • Temple of Elemental Evil Part One (Historic) is not an Epic quest. It is Heroic 7 / Legendary 30, Long, Free To Play. The Compendium lists 50,141 XP on Legendary Elite and 316 RXP per skull, and notes that SSG removed this content in U56 by splitting it into several quests R110. Inferred: with a base level of 30, it falls under the Legendary XP of §7 W-LL. The rest of the Level 30 Quests category was not checked quest by quest UNVERIFIED.
  • Reaper and The Mask of Deception. The Compendium gives 280 RXP per skull for The Mask of Deception R94. The wiki, however, lists it among the quests without Reaper, along with Precious Cargo (25) and the Challenges wiki, not cross-checked R220. The two sources contradict each other, so test it in game.
  • Epic Tome of Learning: it works up to level 30 and stops when you take level 30. It does not apply to saga XP stones or to Reaper XP wiki, not cross-checked R214. It does not apply to Legendary XP W-LL.

Epic quest numbers (Compendium, pages predating U81):

Quest Epic level Duration Elite XP (Normal / Hard) RXP per skull Source
Impossible Demands 21 Medium 11,472 113 R103
The Druid's Curse 23 Long 22,513 (21,206 / 21,859) 132.8 R211
A Legend Revisited 25 Long 26,550 140 R108
The Vault of Night (raid) 22 Very Long 56,715 (53,295 / 55,005) 142.4 R05
The Mask of Deception 30 Medium 19,479 280 R94

The numbers for The Battle for Eveningstar, Trial by Fury, Reclaiming the Rift, Caught in the Web, Lost in the Swamp, Army of Shadow and The Tracker's Trap were not rechecked UNVERIFIED R103 R105 R106.

How much XP do you need?

  • The total from level 20 to level 30 is 8,250,000 Epic XP, at 825,000 XP per level. The source is a 2015 announcement (Update 29, Vargouille, relayed by DDO Players) R111. A user page on the wiki cites the same total wiki, not cross-checked R219. The U81 notes publish no XP table R113.
  • Calculation: 8,250,000 XP is about 424 runs of The Mask of Deception on Elite, or about 311 runs of A Legend Revisited on Elite, before bonuses, potions and tomes R112.
  • Calculation: a saga turned in on Elite is worth only a few quests: 100,000 XP for Menace of the Underdark, 122,000 for Honor of the Huntsilver, 173,000 for Perils of Cormyr R102 R107 R112. Calculation: 173,000 XP is about 6.5 runs of A Legend Revisited on Elite (26,550 XP) R107 R108.
  • Calculation: the Stone of Improved Epic Experience (4,000,000 Epic XP, once per life) covers about 48% of those 8,250,000 XP C-SIE.

Real quest pace: opinions from 2020 players, before U81, with their own build and gear.

  • ManyCookies' opinion, Jul 18, 2020: about 10 to 15 minutes for 50,000 to 60,000 XP on most quests of the Giant Hold saga on R1, travel not included. He rates this pace as poor. It does not hold for every Epic quest R212.
  • Wipe's opinion, Jul 21, 2020: Druid Curse, Tor, Fathom, Trial by Fury, Ghost of Chance and Mirror are among the best for XP per minute. On Aug 5, 2020, for a Barbarian: Trial by Fury 150,000 XP in about 7 minutes, Druid Curse 150,000 in about 10 minutes, Tor 140,000 in about 12 minutes R212.
  • Zhildye's opinion (wiki user page, no cap date, probably before U81): 30,000 to 46,000 XP per minute for a group with 70% fixed bonuses. Single source: do not use it as a reference wiki, not cross-checked R219. Calculation: at 30,000-46,000 XP per minute, 8,250,000 XP takes 3 h to 4 h 35 min. At ManyCookies' pace (50,000 XP in 15 min to 60,000 XP in 10 min, or 3,300 to 6,000 XP per minute), it would take 23 to 41 h. The two opinions are incompatible R212 R219.
  • Historical guide from 2017 ("20-30 quick leveling routine (7 hours)", malkier.xyz): stacked Heroic sagas, Legendary Saltmarsh then Feywild slayers, Epic dailies on Reaper tier 1 up to 26 (Lords of Dust, Spies in the House, Offering of Blood, Wiz King / VON 3-6, Epic Crucible, Epic 2-Toed Tobias, Epic Deleras part 4, What Goes Up, Through a Mirror Darkly), Orchard slayers up to 28, then Barovia up to 30. Read it as history only. It is no current route R100.

6.2 The saga bank (the core of the Epic cycle)

  1. Iconic life or TR life, from 20 to 30, followed by an Epic Reincarnation: finish the Epic sagas (on Elite or Reaper, which counts as Elite for sagas wiki, not cross-checked R217) without turning them in AXS AX.
  2. Epic Reincarnation at level 30: you return to level 20 (check the starting level in game, see §3.1). Saga progress is kept W-SG. It is kept on Lesser and Epic Reincarnation, not on True or Racial wiki, not cross-checked R217. The wiki says Epic Reincarnation is open to Iconics wiki, not cross-checked R218.
  3. Before turning in the sagas, prepare your boosts: elixirs apply to saga rewards wiki, not cross-checked R217 AXS.
    • Elixir: the strongest you can get, for example Sovereign II, +50% for 6 h R177. An elixir's timer pauses in public areas R170. Inferred: it does not run down during a saga turn-in done in a public area. If you drink several, the strongest goes first wiki, not cross-checked R213.
    • Only one equipped XP item: Voice of the Master, Epic Voice of the Master, Pale Green Ioun Stone, Mantle of the Worldshaper and Legendary Dream of the Worldshaper do not stack with each other, each +5% R179 R180 R181 R182 R183 R184. The ship's Shrines of Experience pages (+1 to +5%) say they stack with elixirs but not with other equippable XP item bonuses R186. Inferred: ship and Voice of the Master probably do not add up, so read golden rule 5 of §1 this way and confirm it in game.
    • Tomes of Learning do not apply to XP stones, so not to saga rewards either wiki, not cross-checked R214.
  4. Turn in all the sagas at once. The final reward contains an Experience Gem that is consumed automatically wiki, not cross-checked R217.
  5. Take your levels between two turn-ins so you lose nothing, since the bank cap is 2 levels AXS. The wiki notes that saga XP can go over this cap, without making it a rule W-XP. Follow Axel's advice.
  6. Result according to Axel: about 20 → 27, which skips the low Epic levels where your character is weakest AX.

Saga rules wiki, not cross-checked R217:

Rule Detail
Points per quest 1 on Casual or Normal, 2 on Hard, 3 on Elite or Reaper. Each quest counts once, at its highest difficulty before the turn-in
Reward tiers Hard at 1.75 × the number of quests (rounded down), Elite at 2.5 ×, True Elite when all quests are on Elite
Example (inferred, assuming the tiers are in points and that rounding down also applies to Elite) Menace of the Underdark, 13 quests R102: Hard at 22, Elite at 32, True Elite at 39 points. The pack lists 14 Epic quests (4 at level 21, 6 at 22, 3 at 23, 1 at 24 R101): the saga's 13 match levels 21 to 23, so Caught in the Web (24) would be outside the saga (inferred). At 14 quests, the tiers would be 24, 35 and 42
Catch-up You can replay on Elite a quest done on Normal before turning in the saga
Shortcuts A VIP can skip one quest (counted as Elite). Any player can skip one for 5 Astral Shards. 15 Astral Shards raise you one tier, once per saga and per turn-in. A VIP can combine both skips
Reaper Counts as Elite, with no extra value whatever the skull
Cooldown 100 hours since U50 on four Heroic sagas only: Pirates of the Thunder Sea (Heroic), Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Fables of the Feywild (Heroic), Isle of Dread (Heroic). The turn-in resets the saga's counter to zero. The timer only blocks the next reward. No other saga has a timer

Final reward on Elite: 100,000 XP for Menace of the Underdark, 122,000 for Honor of the Huntsilver, 173,000 for Perils of Cormyr, each with three +3 skill tomes and 10,000 Guild Renown. The Perils of Cormyr and Honor of the Huntsilver quests are played on Epic difficulty R102 R107.

The wiki lists 14 Heroic sagas, 14 Epic and 9 Legendary, for 37, and U81 added 2 Terror of Demogorgon sagas wiki, not cross-checked R217. The table above lists 10 Legendary sagas, Terror included. The gap with 9 is unexplained (does the total of 37 count the 2 sagas from U81?) UNVERIFIED. The Compendium does not confirm the figure of 12 quests in the Terror of Demogorgon saga. The pack lists 14 entries, of which 13 are Heroic 11 / Legendary 37 quests, plus Terror of the Demon Lords (Legendary 37, which the Compendium does not class as a raid). The two arcs, Part One and Part Two, group only 10 of them R116.

Inferred: sagas of level 31+ are filled at the cap during the Legendary life. They only help the Epic bank if you keep their progress until the next Epic Reincarnation.

6.3 Tokens of the Twelve

What to do: play the quests on this list on Elite or Reaper, never on Casual, up to 20 Tokens per heart (Casual never gives a token: wiki, not cross-checked) AX C-TT R216. Only some Epic quests give them, in their end chest. Compendium list (Nov 14, 2025): A Small Problem, Partycrashers, The Snitch, Under the Big Top, Gateway to Khyber, Haywire Foundry, Plane of Night, Tharashk Arena, The Jungle of Khyber, The Prisoner, The Vault of Night, Against the Demon Queen, An Offering of Blood, Chains of Flame, The Chamber of Raiyum, Zawabi's Revenge, Servants of the Overlord, The Lords of Dust, The Spinner of Shadows, Fathom the Depths, Into the Deep, The Claw of Vulkoor, The Last Stand, Bargain of Blood, Spies in the House, Storm the Beaches, The Black Loch, The Tide Turns, Devil Assault, The Chronoscope C-TT. The Fragments page lists 37 (calculation: 7 more than this list of 30, gap unexplained) R158.

The hearts you can buy with Tokens, and the other prices:

Item Price Source
Heroic True Heart of Wood 1,495 DDO Points, or 20 Tokens of the Twelve from Lahar (The Twelve) R165
Heroic True Heart of Blood 20 Tokens of the Twelve from Lahar C-TT R166
Iconic True Heart of Wood 1,495 DDO Points, or 4,200 Commendations of Valor, or 42 Heart Seeds; no Token price R167
Epic Heart of Wood 1,295 DDO Points, or 4,200 Commendations of Valor, or 42 Heart Seeds; no Token price R168

The wiki specifies that 20 Tokens give one True Reincarnation token, Heart of Wood for a class or Heart of Blood for the racial, bound to the character wiki, not cross-checked R216.

Sources of Tokens:

Source Detail Source
End Chest of these Epic quests The Token page lists the Token itself as loot; the Compendium gives neither a quantity nor a drop rate R160 R158
Fragments of a Token of the Twelve 100 Fragments = 1 Token from Lahar, despite the item description mentioning the Epic Rituals altar R158 R160
The Chronoscope (Legendary) Source of Tokens and Fragments, no quantity given; 2024 page R158 R159
Greater Token of the Twelve Drops only in the Raid Warded Chest of The Chronoscope, Plane of Night and Zawabi's Revenge; Lahar gives 1 Token for 1 Greater Token and sells the Greater Token for a Commendation of Heroism; 2021 page, quantity per chest not given R161 R160
Other exchange wiki, not cross-checked 300 Epic Cannith ingredients = 1 Token from Kaldoth Maz R216

Drop rates (wiki, rough, pre-U81, not cross-checked) R216:

  • The wiki gives per-quest averages that it calls approximate and partly outdated, valid for Epic Elite only.
  • 1 token: Bargain of Blood, The Black Loch, The Tide Turns.
  • 1.5 tokens: Spies in the House, The Jungle of Khyber, Haywire Foundry, The Vault of Night.
  • 2.5 tokens: Chains of Flame.
  • Fragments, in the range of 50 to 70: Storm the Beaches, The Snitch, Fathom the Depths.
  • On Hard, most quests "usually" give one token. On Normal, 11 to 30% of the fragments from before. On Casual, never a token: open on Elite or Reaper to get them.
  • Tokens drop in the old Eberron Epic adventures, not in the Faerûn ones like Menace of the Underdark. For free players, only the three Web of Chaos quests give them: The Lords of Dust, Servants of the Overlord, The Spinner of Shadows.
  • Calculation from these averages: 20 Tokens take at least 14 runs on Elite at 1.5 tokens, or 20 at 1 token.

6.4 Commendations of Valor and Heart Seeds

  • Confirmed sources: "Any Epic Quest" and opening the Otto's Irresistible Boxes (Epic, Improved Epic, Bound Improved Epic), 1,300 Commendations each according to the page, which does not say whether this amount also applies to a quest (the wiki gives at most 65 to 75 per Epic quest, see below) R215. The page mentions neither Legendary quests nor a per-quest amount. It dates from 2022 R162.
  • Prices: 4,200 Commendations make an Iconic True Heart of Wood or an Epic Heart of Wood C-CV R167 R168. A Heart Seed costs 100 Commendations, and 42 Seeds make a heart R163.
  • Wiki formula wiki, not cross-checked: at the end of an Epic quest, above Casual and with no ransack penalty, the amount is a multiplier × (quest level - 17). The multiplier is 2 on Normal, 3 on Hard, 5 on Elite. The wiki gives as examples 75 for a level 30 quest on Elite and 25 for a level 20 quest on Elite R215. Calculation: the written formula gives 65 and 15, so the formula and the examples do not match. Do not rely on it.
  • Boosts to Commendations wiki, not cross-checked: elixirs, VIP, ship and items increase them; Tomes of Learning do not R215. The wiki only describes Epic quests.
  • Contradiction on Heart Seeds: the Heart Seed page gives as a source "Any Quest level 20 or higher, once you have reached Level 30" and says nothing about Legendary R163. Players (Apr 2024, before U81) contradict each other R164:
    • Fhrek's opinion, Apr 2024: at the XP cap, quests give 2 Heart Seeds instead of Commendations;
    • Dragavon's opinion, Apr 2024: an Epic or Legendary quest gives 2 Seeds to a level 30;
    • JustHavingFunBro's opinion, Apr 2024: only Legendary ones.
  • Calculation, if 2 Seeds per quest is correct: 2 Seeds are worth 200 Commendations, so 4,200 Commendations take 21 quests. With the wiki's example (75 per quest), you would need 56, but that figure is unreliable R164 R215.
  • Axel says he also gets Commendations as a Legendary quest end reward AX: not confirmed by a page UNVERIFIED.
